Job Description

The role is responsible for the overall maintenance function of the underground mine. The objective is to ensure the required availability of plant and fleet assets to support safe and efficient operations, enabling the achievement of production targets. This role includes legal accountability in accordance with the South African Mine Health and Safety Act.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Lead maintenance operations to drive customer satisfaction, innovation, and cost reduction while maintaining equipment performance.
  • Analyze plant and equipment performance to identify critical issues and ensure maintenance supports Palabora’s operational and financial goals.
  • Develop strategic replacement plans for vehicles and plant equipment, including managing capital expenditure to sustain productivity.
  • Promote a strong safety culture, ensuring full compliance with legislation and Palabora's safety standards.
  • Optimize maintenance costs by delivering reliable, quality service without compromising safety or performance.

Intrinsic Qualities:

  • Ability to plan, manage and control a divisional budget.
  • Clear understanding of the underground mining and surface mining processes.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to manage and function effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team in a multicultural environment.
  • Proficiency in maintenance and strategic planning, organizational development as well as a proven safety and production track record in a leadership position.
  • Knowledge and experience of underground mining methods and equipment.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • BSc/B. Tech/B. Honours Degree in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering.
  • Mechanical/Electrical Engineer’s Certificate of Competency (GCC Mine or Works)
  • Minimum of 10 years in Friction Winders, fixed plant and TMM maintenance
  • A postgraduate degree in Engineering or Business Administration would be advantageous
